Oh, Uganda…Oh, Nigeria…what are we going to do with you?
The US gives Uganda and Nigeria hundreds of millions of dollars a year in economic and military assistance. Both countries are anti-gay. Both countries enacted laws to jail homos for being homosexual and for having homo sex (14 years for a first-offender to life). People who don’t report homos who have homo sex also can go to jail. In both Uganda and Nigeria gays make up less than 1 percent of the population so sanctions on the basis of this legislation would harm innocents. But the citizens in both countries overwhelmingly support the anti-gay laws. I guess the question to consider is should humanitarian aid go to countries that don’t support human rights?
